A modern reproduction of a ‘Spangenhelm’ in the style of the 6th century AD, the skull constructed of four iron plates forming a hemispherical dome, joined externally by riveted narrow iron bands crossed over the crown and by a further riveted band encircling the base, the latter reinforced by an additional copper band riveted over the brow, fitted with a pair of long leaf-shaped cheekpieces hinged at the sides, a shorter plate defending the nape of the neck, and in ‘aged’ condition throughout, 19.5cm diameter, 16cm high overall (at fault)
Note: Helmets of this general type were worn in Europe by the Goths and other tribes of the Migration period
