£1,300
An English Rapier, circa 1640/50, with slender blade, the forte of flattened hexagonal section and stamped with the Iberian inscriptions ‘Clemente Bonim en Alamania’ and ‘Mi Sinal es el Gavisco De Boov’ within the respective deep fullers on each side, iron hilt chiselled in low relief, including dish-guard decorated with a pattern of overlapping circular bands pierced with small holes, a pair of forward-swept short quillons, and knuckle-guard interrupted by a baluster moulding (heavily oxidised throughout, the grip missing), blade length, 101cm
Note: The first of the inscriptions is a reference to the German bladesmith Clemens Bongen, working in Solingen in the second half of the 17th century
More Information
The blade shows some distortion along its length and the tip is blunt. The dish guard shows some dents, some distortions to the scalloped edge, some small splits and an area of residue. The knuckle guard is detached from the pommel. The grip shows a loss of detail as a result of use, corrosion and subsequent wear. The majority of the grip is missing.
