Manner of Sir Godfrey Kneller, Bt (1646-1723),
A half length portrait of George I in coronation robes,
Oil on canvas,
Unsigned,
75cm x 61cm,
Framed

NOTE: This portrait is similar in pose to the full length and half length coronation portraits attributed to Kneller and his studio, but with the King's head slightly dexter, rather than slightly sinister as he appears in most Kneller portraits. We believe this work to date to the 19th century.

More Information

The picture has been re-lined at some point in the past. The paint surface shows a fine craquelure throughout, and some small areas of minor wear to pinhead highpoints, most noticeable in the dark background at the top of the picture. There is an area of restoration approximately 11.5cm x 7cm above the left shoulder. Examination under UV reveals further evidence of minor restoration. The frame is in generally good condition, showing minor chips and scuffs to the high points, edges and corners. Both the picture and the frame would benefit from cleaning.
