A Mortuary-hilted Backsword, mid-17th century, with flat blade tapering to a blunt point, the hilt formed of flat bars and characteristic boat-shaped guard decorated with a naïve design of foliage and male heads chiselled in low relief, the pommel en suite, the guard additionally decorated with pierced with scrolling tendrils, with a figural female nude cartouche cut front and rear, and retaining its original spirally moulded grip bound with patterned wire between ‘Turk’s head’ knots, blade length 95cm

No markings on blade. Blade notched in places. Tip rounded and slightly bright with no edge. Some spattered white residue in several areas, with a further area of clear residue to the hilt.
