The picture has been re-laid at some point in the past, and may have been cut from a rectangular canvas as part of this process. The paint surface shows craquelure throughout and evidence of historic restoration, particularly to the face and décolletage, confirmed by examination under UV. The edges of the original canvas show wear, chips and small losses to the paint surface, particularly to the right hand side.
