The paint surface shows craquelure throughout. There is a small depressed puncture to the canvas at the top right of the fire grate, and a depressed scratch approximately 15mm long at junction of the front leg and arm of the chair on the right of the picture. There is a repair to the top right corner of the canvas approximately 7cm in from the right hand side and 4cm down from the top edge, corresponding to the patch on the back of the canvas. There are punctures to the canvas at each of the four corners on the stretcher, which may relate to how the picture was initially framed. The canvas is loose in its frame, and this has resulted in some wear to the edges of the picture. Examination under UV reveals no evidence of further restoration or repair. The frame is not original, and has been overpainted with gold and brown paint, which is now beginning to rub and wear, particularly at the high points.
