A George III mahogany and satinwood cross banded knife box, of serpentine form, the hinged cover inlaid with a conch shell opening to a fitted interior inlaid with stringing, 37cm H x 23cm W x 27cm D (at fault)

Heavy wear and abrasion to the exterior. Two large splits running horizontally across the reverse of the box and the cover, and one split running vertically from the cover to the box down the side. Evidence of glue repair and later screws in hinges, indicating some level of restoration. Extensive loss to the beading along the edges of the box and the cover (as pictured). Later felt lining to base, which shows some holes and wear. Some loss to the inlay on the inside of the cover. Heavy wear to the interior, traces of glue residue. Later supports to the inside. Several fractures to the cutlery grille, with evidence of later repair. Moderate loss to the veneer. Evidence of damage and later repair around the lock mechanism. See pictures for illustration.
