A sampler dated 1830 (? last numeral indistinct), worked by Mary Ann Smith aged 10 years, possibly Scottish, worked in polychrome silk threads on a fine linen ground with a plaid kilt and black headdress with their dog, sheep beside a grassy mound and a brick bothy, all above a busy ground depicting flowers, foliage, plants and roses surrounding a religious verse all within a repeating anthemion design border, 41.5cm x 49.5cm, later framed and glazed (at fault)

More Information

The sampler is framed under glass and has not been removed for inspection. The fabric ground shows age related darkening with some variation in the level of discolouration throughout, and some slightly rippled areas. There is an area of loss above the verse. The colours of the silk work remain distinct, but have faded somewhat over time. This is particularly noticeable on the verse, the lower lines of which are more faded than the upper.
