The picture has been re-laid at some point in the past. The paint surface shows craquelure throughout, and some small losses to the varnish. There is a fine inverted V shaped scratch approximately 2cm wide to the left of the figure’s left hand, with a further fine scratch approximately 6cm long running through the ring and little fingers and beyond. Examination under UV shows evidence of restoration, presumably carried out at the time of re-laying. There are various small spots of dirt and residue across the surface, and the picture would therefore benefit from cleaning. The frame appears to be structurally sound, but shows open joints to the corners, together with overpainting, rubbing and wear to the gilt highlights, with some evidence of repair to the moulded details. The picture moves somewhat in the frame.
