More Information

The portrait of Sir Thos. Craven has been re-laid at some point in the past. The painted surface shows some wear and craquelure throughout. There is a speckled white residue across the right half of the canvas. Inspection under UV shows evidence of minor restoration, and an area of dripped residue down the face. All edges of the re-laid canvas show some wear and minor paint loss, particularly to the bottom edge, probably the result of the canvas moving in the original frame. The outline of the original frame can be seen on the canvas. The top edge of the support canvas has worn through in several places.

The portrait of Lady Of Sir Thos. Craven has been re-laid at some point in the past. The painted surface shows some wear and craquelure throughout. Inspection under UV shows evidence of minor restoration, most noticeably to the décolletage. All edges of the re-laid canvas show some wear and minor paint loss, particularly to the bottom edge, probably the result of the canvas moving in the original frame. The outline of the original frame can be seen on the canvas.

Both pictures would benefit from cleaning. We believe both portraits to date from circa 1700.
